Leadership Tennessee NEXT offers early-to-mid career professionals in-depth personal and professional development while fostering a better understanding of our state. Each session features engagement with Signature Program members, highlights issues and opportunities specific to Tennessee, and promotes personal skill development. Leadership Tennessee NEXT is Tennessee’s only statewide leadership program that spans geographic and industry boundaries while focusing on Tennessee’s existing and emerging leaders. Leadership Tennessee NEXT is committed to bringing together diverse participants who are educated, engaged, and inspired to make Tennessee a better place while participating in a program that expands their personal, professional, and community networks.


NEXT is:

  • An opportunity for early and mid-career leaders to create cross-state, cross-sector networks, learn about Tennessee’s strengths and challenges, and prepare to serve their local and professional communities.

  • A cross-sector, cross-generational networking and learning opportunity linking Tennessee’s growing leaders with the Signature Program network.

NEXT is not:

  • A prerequisite for selection into to the Signature Program

  • A guarantee that a participant will be accepted into the Signature Program in the future


  • A dynamic mid-level professional who is 5-15 years into their current career. Participants will typically be under 40 years of age, but there is no specific age restriction.

  • A professional who both excels in his/her field, engages in committed service to their various communities, and would benefit from connection to peers in different sectors and geographic regions.

  • An individual who has passion for their community, their career sector, and the state of Tennessee and who can, and will, translate those talents into fulfilling the vision of Leadership Tennessee: Tennessee will be known nationally as a state where leaders and engaged citizens are connected, well-informed, and committed to solving problems through strategic dialogue and balanced, pragmatic approach.

A dynamic class of young leaders will depend on our membership seeking out and encouraging applications from the utmost tier of rising leaders. Southwest - Haywood, Madison, Hardeman, Chester, McNairy, Henderson, Hardin, and Decatur counties. Northern Middle - Humphries, Houston, Stewart, Dickson, Montgomery, Cheatham, Williamson, Davidson, Robertson, Rutherford, Wilson, Sumner, and Trousdale counties. Southern Middle - Wayne, Perry, Lawrence, Lewis, Hickman, Giles, Maury, Marshall, Lincoln, Moore, Bedford, Franklin, and Coffee counties. Upper Cumberland - Warren, Cannon, DeKalb, Smith, Macon, Van Buren, White, Putnam, Jackson, Overton, Clay, Pickett, Cumberland, and Fentress counties. Southeast - Marion, Grundy, Sequatchie, Hamilton, Bledsoe, Bradley, Rhea, Meigs, McMinn, and Polk counties. East - Monroe, Loudon, Roane, Morgan, Scott, Blount, Knox, Anderson, Campbell, Sevier, Jefferson, Grainger, Union, Claiborne, Hamblen, and Cooke counties. Northeast - Greene, Hawkins, Hancock, Unicoi, Washington, Sullivan, Carter, and Johnson counties.
At Leadership Tennessee, we know acknowledging our differences and embracing diversity is critical to the success of NEXT. We need leaders from different backgrounds with different points of view to truly create a space for relevant conversations that will help shape a better future for Tennessee. While a response to this question is NOT mandatory, knowing the race of applicants aids the selection committee in achieving the goal of bringing together a diverse group of leaders from across Tennessee.
